Beneath the bright lights of the COBO showing area in Detroit, Toyota rolled out the stylish FT-1 Concept--a vehicle which suggests a return of the famed Supra, but also possibly a new direction for our preferred automaker's approach to designing cars.
If that's the case, then color us excited. The FT-1 is, simply put, a beautiful car. Its sports/racer body sits low, proffing a long hood with narrow, LED-accented head lamps. The abrupt bump of its roof line is dynamically executed, and lends itself to the vehicle's eye-catching profile.
What's the most interesting to us about this sports car isn't about its Supra and racing heritage, but its potential. Toyota purposely left a powertrain out of this car, meaning its design and purpose is more than likely a jumping off point for vehicles to follow.
That hasn't stopped the Japanese car maker from giving us some insight into what might sit under the hood, however. Different iterations of hybrid, inline-six, V6 and V8 engines have all been brought up as possible underpinnings.
On top of its stated mission of succeeding the Supra, the automotive newshounds over at Autoblog stated that the potential of the car goes beyond its sporting intent. Specifically, one of their writers believe that this new design direction could lend itself to future new Toyota models--especially their hybrids.
Do you think elements of the FT-1's design would lend itself to a Toyota hybrid? Take a look at the video below and decide for yourself.
